Session 3 | Examine Yourselves
In this sermon, Adam McGath speaks on examining ourselves in light of spiritual discernment, beginning with the foundational truth that every person must first examine whether they are saved. He urges listeners to confront the reality of sin—not as mistakes, but as rebellion against God—and to recognize that mankind’s only hope is found in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Quoting Psalm 14 and Romans 3, McGath explains that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that salvation is the free gift of grace through faith in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. Before any self-examination as believers can take place, one must first settle the question of eternity—whether they have trusted in Christ alone for salvation, apart from works or religion.
From that foundation, McGath turns to the believer’s ongoing walk, teaching from 2 Corinthians 13:5 and 1 Corinthians 3 that true self-examination is not about doubting salvation but discerning whether one is walking in the flesh or in the Spirit. He contrasts a carnal, self-driven life with one empowered by God’s grace, reminding believers that they are eternally secure and loved by an unchanging Father. To examine oneself rightly, McGath says, is to return to fellowship with God—to judge ourselves honestly, confess sin, and walk anew in His grace. Christianity, he concludes, is not a lifestyle but life itself—a daily, grace-filled fellowship with the Lord that produces humility, joy, and renewed purpose.
